2008 Grant Recipient - Crystal Murray
| In the summer of 2008, the
Cultural Arts Foundation Northwest funded a grant for Crystal Murray
to attend the Summer Dance Lab at Whitman College. This is
a two, three and five week intensive program focused on developing
well rounded dancers.
Crystal was a freshman at Bremerton High School
and had studied various styles of dance, including ballet, jazz,
tap, hip hop, lyrical, and musical theatre, and she was a member of
the Silverdale Elite Dance Team performing at various
community events throughout Kitsap County, completing solos, duets,
and group pieces in regional dance competitions such as Spotlight,
Starlight, and Showstopper. Crystal has attended numerous
dance conventions including Co. Dance and New York City Dance
Alliance and has taken classes in various styles from several
well-known teachers and choreographers in the dance industry.
Crystal also took a Master Class offered by a company member of
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in 2008. In November 2008,
Crystal began taking ballet and jazz classes at Jo Emery Ballet
School in Tacoma and was almost immediately invited to be an
apprentice with the adjacent Tacoma Performing Dance Company.
Crystal has recently started a hip hop dance group at Bremerton High
School, GOK ("Girls Only Krew") and has performed solo dance
routines at her high school talent shows and was awarded first place
in the solo dance category in January 2009. Crystal is a very
intense, technical dancer and is well-suited for ballet. Crystal
has plans to be a professional dancer and has indicated that she
would like to dance with "whatever company will take her." Photos shown below: |
